Our view of Scripture determines everything else we believe about God, truth, salvation, history, science and everything else in life. It is the great battle of Satan since the Garden of Eden to destroy our confidence in the absolute truthfulness of God’s Word. From the beginning, he tempted Even with this statement, “Has God said…?” Satan’s primary goal in leading people astray is to convince them that God’s Word is something less than totally true and trustworthy in every single word. Therefore, the inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture is a foundational doctrine of Christian teaching. To combat the rising skepticism of the time, several hundred evangelical scholars came together in 1978 to draft the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy and to give unity among evangelicals around this crucial doctrine.

The “Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy” was produced at an international Summit Conference of evangelical leaders, held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago in the fall of 1978. This congress was sponsored by the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy. The Chicago Statement was signed by nearly 300 noted evangelical scholars, including James Boice, Norman L. Geisler, John Gerstner, Carl F. H. Henry, Kenneth Kantzer, Harold Lindsell, John Warwick Montgomery, Roger Nicole, J. I. Packer, Robert Preus, Earl Radmacher, Francis Schaeffer, R. C. Sproul, and John Wenham.

I have included the full statement with explanation here, as well as another document that I wrote about Jesus’ view of inerrancy. I hope you will master these truths, because without them, you will not even be able to share the gospel in light of the objection, “How do you really know that Scripture is true?” It is a valid question for which every Christian must have a ready defense (1 Pet 3:15Open Link in New Window).
